Bharti Airtel and 6 GSM Biggies To Share Network Infra To Boost Rural Mobile Broadband Penetration in Africa, Middle East

Bharti Airtel, India’s largest telecom operator in terms of both subscribers and revenues, and six other telecom service providers have agreed to cooperate on network infrastructure sharing initiatives. These initiatives are to offer Internet and mobile broadband access to unserved rural communities across Africa and West Asia.

The move comes on the heels of a top-level meeting of senior leaders of Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Orange, MTN, Etisalat, Zain and Ooredoo groups at the recently concluded Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the GSMA said in a media statement Tuesday. The GSMA is an industry lobby representing GSM operators worldwide.
