China Unicom’s first-half net profit was up 55% from a year earlier, thanks to growing data use and more 3G mobile subscribers—though average revenue per user was down.

The company Thursday posted a net profit for the six months ended June 30 of 5.32 billion yuan ($869.3 million), beating both the year-earlier 3.43 billion yuan and the 4.89 billion yuan average forecast of four analysts polled by Thomson Reuters.
