The O2‘s 4G services in the UK is suddenly getting a whole lot better now and it seems that existing 3G customers will be getting 4G at no extra cost.
The customers who own 4G-enabled phones will received a text message from the network which informing them of the free upgrade. The message would say either “O2 4G is here” if the postcode you registered to O2 with can currently receive 4G, or “Get ready for O2 4G” if it can’t. However, more importantly the text would contain the date on which your 4G access starts, at which point you can head on over to O2’s on-line setup assistant which will guide you through getting started.
O2 has already started sending out the texts and the users should keep an eye out for one over the next few weeks. It’s not clear whether every 3G customer with a 4G phone will be eligible for the free upgrade to 4G. The shift from 3G speeds to 4G would be offered for free to existing O2 customers.
The operator stated that the idea is to help customers experience the benefits of 4G services and the upgrade process will run alongside its Pay Monthly 4G tariffs, which were launched at the end of last year.
The process begins this week and existing customers will hear from O2 over the course of the next month.
